  • Full text: Abraham Fuks is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at McGill University. His research interests have included the immunogenetics of diabetes, the biology of tumour-associated antigens and cell adhesion molecules, and ethical aspects of the design of trials involving human subjects. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at McGill from 1995 to 2006 and was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Social Medicine at Harvard University in 2007-2008. His current scholarly interests include the language of medicine and its metaphoric structure and the study of narratives in the clinical dyad. Dr. Fuks is currently the Research Integrity Officer at McGill University.

He has organized several projects on research integrity and scientific misconduct, including more than a dozen workshops for university administrators, bench scientists, post-docs and graduate students and the production of a series of case studies on video for educational use. He was on the Institute of Medicine committee that produced the report, Integrity in Scientific Research: Creating an Environment That Promotes Responsible Conduct (2002). Dr. Frankel was on the planning committee for the 2nd World Conference on Research Integrity, Singapore, 2010. He is editor of AAAS's quarterly publication, Professional Ethics Report, and serves on the Science and Ethics Advisory Group at Hoffmann-La Roche-Genentech.

  • Full text: Daniele Fanelli is a Leverlhulme research fellow at the University of Edinburgh, UK, where he uses advanced quantitative methods to help settle long-standing philosophical and sociological debates on the nature of science. The prevalence and causes of bias and misconduct are one of his main research interests. His 2009 meta-analysis on scientific misconduct is in the top 1% of Article-Level Metrics for all PLoS articles, currently counting more than 85,000 downloads. His background includes a PhD in Evolutionary Biology and a Master in Scientific Communication. He has published several papers on the evolution of cooperation in wasps, and has written over 140 popular science articles for magazines including New Scientist, L'espresso and Le Scienze, before being awarded a Marie Curie European fellowship to start his current line of research. He is a regular media commentator on issues of scientific misconduct.

  • Full text: Dick Bourgeois-Doyle is Director of Corporate Governance at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC). In this role, he has management responsibility for the secretariat to the NRC Council and senior executive as well as for ethics policies and administrative support involving human subjects research, animal care, conflict of interest, and disclosures of wrongdoing as well as research integrity. He has also been involved in a number of special projects since joining the NRC Executive Offices in 1987. He previously served as Chief Policy Advisor and Chief of Staff to the Canadian Minister of Science and Technology and to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. Prior to joining the federal government, Bourgeois-Doyle was a start-up manager of successful technology and public relations firms. A former broadcaster and journalist, Bourgeois-Doyle has contributed to many articles, TV features, and radio programs on science history and is the author of the biographies George J. Klein: the Great Inventor and Her Daughter, the Engineer: the Life of Elsie Gregory MacGill. He is also the Editor of Renaissance II: Canadian Creativity and Innovation in the New Millennium.
