His research interests have included the immunogenetics of diabetes, the biology of tumour-associated antigens and cell adhesion molecules, and ethical aspects of the design of trials involving human subjects. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at McGill from 1995 to 2006 and was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Social Medicine at Harvard University in 2007-2008. His current scholarly interests include the language of medicine and its metaphoric structure and the study of narratives in the clinical dyad. • Full text: Daniele Fanelli is a Leverlhulme research fellow at the University of Edinburgh, UK, where he uses advanced quantitative methods to help settle long-standing philosophical and sociological debates on the nature of science. The prevalence and causes of bias and misconduct are one of his main research interests. His 2009 meta-analysis on scientific misconduct is in the top 1% of Article-Level Metrics for all PLoS articles, currently counting more than 85,000 downloads. His background includes a PhD in Evolutionary Biology and a Master in Scientific Communication. He has published several papers on the evolution of cooperation in wasps, and has written over 140 popular science articles for magazines including New Scientist, L'espresso and Le Scienze, before being awarded a Marie Curie European fellowship to start his current line of research. He is a regular media commentator on issues of scientific misconduct.

David Wright

• Full text: David Wright joined the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) as Director in January 2012. Before that he had a long academic career at Michigan State University where, most recently, he served as Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Community Sustainability (previously CARRS) where he taught history of science and technology, and the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR). Earlier, Wright served for eleven years as the University Intellectual Integrity Officer and the Assistant Vice President for Research Ethics and Standards at MSU in which dual capacity he was responsible for most research regulatory compliance at the University. He also served for twelve years as the Chair of the University Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects (UCRIHS). In 2001 Wright became an 'Expert Consultant' to ORI, working with both the Division of Investigation Oversight and the Division of Education and Integrity, where he helped design and implement the RIO Boot Camp program. He previously served as program officer for the Humanities, Science, and Technology Program at the National Endowment for the Humanities. Dr. Wright studied humanities at Princeton (A.B.) and at MSU (Ph.D.).

In this role, he has management responsibility for the secretariat to the NRC Council and senior executive as well as for ethics policies and administrative support involving human subjects research, animal care, conflict of interest, and disclosures of wrongdoing as well as research integrity. He has also been involved in a number of special projects since joining the NRC Executive Offices in 1987. He previously served as Chief Policy Advisor and Chief of Staff to the Canadian Minister of Science and Technology and to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. Prior to joining the federal government, Bourgeois-Doyle was a start-up manager of successful technology and public relations firms. A former broadcaster and journalist, Bourgeois-Doyle has contributed to many articles, TV features, and radio programs on science history and is the author of the biographies George J. Klein: the Great Inventor and Her Daughter, the Engineer: the Life of Elsie Gregory MacGill. He is also the Editor of Renaissance II: Canadian Creativity and Innovation in the New Millennium.

Jan Taplick

From 1995 to 1999, he undertook PhD studies in Biochemistry at the Institute of Molecular Biology, Vienna Biocenter, Austria. In 2000, Jan undertook postdoctoral research at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel under the supervision of Professor Moshe Oren in the field of tumor suppressor genes. He did this until 2002, when he became Fellowship Programme Manager at European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) in Heidelberg, Germany. She chaired the committee that wrote the Ethical Principles for the Association for the Study of Higher Education. Dr. Anderson's work over the past 25 years has been in the areas of research integrity, research misconduct, and academy-industry relations. Her research, funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, has focused on the research environment in relation to research integrity. Dr. Anderson was principal investigator of an NIH-funded study of international research collaborations, and she recently co-edited (with Nick Steneck) the volume International Research Collaborations: Much to be Gained, Many Ways to Get in Trouble (Routledge Press).

After a stay at the Conference of Rectors and Principals of Quebec Universities (CREPUQ) for the works of the University Programs Commission, she joined the team set up by the Quebec Minister of Research, Science and Technology in order to elaborate the Policy on Science and Innovation that was made public in 2001. SRCR is responsible for the implementation of the Tri-Agency Framework on Responsible Conduct of Research on behalf of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The Secretariat is also responsible for the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans. She is a lawyer whose career has focused on health law and public policy. A native of Montreal, Susan received her undergraduate degree from Bryn Mawr College, civil law and common law degrees from McGill University, and a Master of Laws from the University of Toronto. Her professional experience includes positions as a senior research associate at the Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law at McGill University, Director of Legislation and Law Reform at the Canadian Bar Association, legal counsel at Health Canada and Director of Research for the Law Commission of Canada. Prior to her appointment to the Secretariat in September, 2007, Ms Zimmerman was a member of the Health Law Group at the Toronto office of a national law firm, where she represented health care institutions and a variety of health care professionals. Ms Zimmerman has also been a university lecturer in health law and ethics and a member of research ethics boards.
