Full story

Dr Matt Spick is a Lecturer in Health Data Science at the University of Surrey, where his work in metascience and research integrity examines how Open Science can be exploited by unethical actors, particularly through machine learning and generative AI. His research examines and quantifies emerging threats to the biomedical literature, including paper mills, redundant publications, and AI-generated manuscripts that evade standard editorial checks. A UKRI-funded investigator, he also studies FAIR data compliance in metabolomics to strengthen reproducibility and transparency. Combining expertise in bioinformatics, multi-omics, and health data, Spick advocates for evidence-based safeguards in order to defend the principles of Open Science and protect the integrity of the scientific record.
